Personalized Start page - Netvibes
Start pages on the Internet though many are not as popular as they can be but they are getting there. Services like Netvibes are helping the developers get popularize the space.
With Netvibes you can personalize, add RSS/ATOM feeds, and of course, it uses lots of AJAX goodness
(you can instantly rename the page to whatever you want). You can move modules, change the content of each module, plus access all your feeds from any computer. The speed is extremely quick unlike other personal homepage services like those of Microsoft, Yahoo and Google and Netvibes also allows you to have a few choices for conducting your searches (Google, Yahoo, MSN Search, or Wikipedia). One of the modules also allows you to sign in to Gmail and keep track of your mail. There’s also an option to add a webnote (a “sticky note” that allows you to keep notes on your page).
Netvibes front page organizes your content into compact boxes, or modules. Select Expand All or Collapse to display either all of your content or only the header of each Netvibes module. When you click a news story from, say, the BBC, the Netvibes main panel makes way for a list of recent BBC news. Or you can just roll over headlines within a module to pop up a synopsis of the story. Another nice touch: Netvibes remembers your settings and the tab you last read, even after you log out.
For more fine-tuning, check the Settings link to control interface themes and languages and to enable keyboard shortcuts–such as the letter J to jump between tabs. Netvibes is adding support for 40 languages; you can already use it in Romance languages, Russian, Chinese, Croatian, and Hindi. You can even make a tab public in the Netvibes Ecosystem for any of the many millions of other Netvibes users to see. The Netvibes ecosystem allows you to customize and share your netvibes experience. In the ecosystem the favorite web sites and feeds database is maintained so that they can be shared.
They currently have a number of features in the works, including:
-
Full managing of the “my feeds” section
-
Search for feeds
-
Bookmarks module
-
Tag module
-
Stock quotes modules
-
Flickr module
-
Color Themes
-
User background image
-
Unread status (this would be great!)
-
Multiple pages
-
OPML export
-
Feed reader opens to the right when you scroll down instead of the top. (If you have quite a few feeds that you read, you would find that the reader would open all the way up at the top while you were at the bottom of the page and you had to scroll back up to the top….great fix!!)
-
Bugs fixed regarding feeds not importing or loading OPML
-
Links of the RSS modules are now real links. Firefox users can middle click them and open pages in tabs.
-
Feed headlines now display with several line if necessary.
One of the good things is that the team at Netvibes is not complacent and they keep making improvements of the product. Feeds auto-update every 20 minutes, plus there’s a new icon that allows you to refresh an individual RSS module
