We first heard of video startup Cuts.com a year ago, although details were scarce. After spending over a year in development, the company is just about ready to launch to a small group of beta users, and expand from there. They let us take a quick look at the current product last week - look for an expansion of their private beta in two weeks or so. Like Jumpcut (acquired by Yahoo) and Motionbox, Cuts aims to help users edit video online using the latest Flash tools to make the videos interesting and interactive. Since the product is in beta, though that is the done thing these days when launching a new web service, but it is heartening to know that the team at cuts is adding new features. Therefore be on the lookout for new updates as Cuts will add a few more bells and whistles after their public launch.
The main mission of cuts is “to enable the next logical step - easy control of the video experience itself.” The Cuts web site states that Cuts plans to leverage the Cutlist platform to deliver three distinct services:
-
First to launch is our online video service, which is the easiest way to create and share your take of online video. With CutMaker, it’s only a few clicks to add captions, insert sound effects, loop the best parts, and skip the boring stuff - and in minutes you can share your creation via embed or email. All you need is the URL of your favorite video and something to say.
-
Cuts Full Length service designed for DVD’s and downloaded videos will offer users the ability to manipulate the playback experience of movies and TV shows. Users can trim inappropriate scenes for children, mash-up videos to create their new take, and add captions and sound effects to enhance any story.
-
Cuts TV is being developed to serve cable and satellite providers and will offer them the ability to offer new forms of parental control and premium services on top of their On-demand and DVR products.
The online video space is getting exciting and it is a matter of time for the traditional cable
and television space merges with the online video space. If you would like to try your hand at editing now is the time to do it since there is a contest on at Cuts where every week a winner is declared for the best video! More details are at the Cuts web site.
