CogMap: The Org Chart Wiki

CogMap is an org chart wiki that allows members of large organizations, sales people, and entrepreneurs to Cogmap, map, organization, wiki, ajax, web 2.0, collaborativegrasp organizational dynamics. Cogmap takes organization charts to a whole new level. You can freely view, edit, and maintain corporate structures online. The interface is eye-catching application and combined the concept of wiki with org charts; information that’s usually held tightly and managed internally within corporations.

Cogmap provides a potentially powerful service. If your work requires you to interact with a lot of people in different organizations, having the ability to pull up an org chart online and finding the right person to speak to certainly makes my life easier. I can browse through all the names in a chart, search for a specific department, and even compare the current org chart with an older version if needed.

Success of CogMap is dependent on how many users use the service. If the Cogmap, map, organization, wiki, ajax, web 2.0, collaborativedevelopers can get a whole lot of people to use Cogmap over a period of time it will become a powerful resource for everyone. Though right now major usage of the present users is for organizational charts some users have used Cogmap in an imaginative way where they have built political structures, family trees, or basic networks.

The application is powerful but, as is the case with a lot of web 2.0 services, the information added to Cogmap is not verified therefore chances of it having bogus information is there. With that said, I think Cogmap will be interesting to watch. I do have mixed feelings about it, but hope to see it take off.
