At last Facebook app gets Last.fm
Facebook last month had launched a new platform that would allow third parties to partner with the social
networking site and Facebook provided the hooks (API’s) for the third parties so that they could port their applications to Facebook. It was assumed that Last.fm, because of its popularity, would be one of the applications that would be there in the first release. A lot of people, including me, we surprised that it was not there. When iLike a similar service like that of Last.fm but not as popular became the top 5 applications at Facebook it proved that leaving Last.fm was a big mistakes.
While some independent programmers had started the initiative to build an application which would allow you to port Last.fm to Facebook the world got the news that CBS had bought Last.fm. Therefore people assumed that maybe Last.fm was invited but because of the CBS move the whole thing was delayed. It turned out that Last.fm was not invited to be part of the pre-launch program.
Do not despair though the good news is that now Last.fm is part of Facebook and you can port Last.fm to
Facebook. Matthew Ogle announced on his blog that “We’re pleased to announce the release of Last.fm Music, our first (and certainly not last) Facebook app. Since the launch of Facebook Platform last Thursday, certain parties have been wondering where our application was. The truth is that we were perplexingly left out of Facebook’s early development program, so while some of our competitors had six weeks to work on their stuff, we had to wait until Thursday like everyone else.”
The new Facebook app gives you the ability to add Last.fm’s personalized music player. You can share saved stations or playlists along with the saved tracks. Another cool feature is that you need not be a Last.fm user to use this in Facebook. The Flash based streaming player creates a station based on your ‘favorite music’ section.
You can also see what your friends are listening to or for that matter any Facebook member is listening to and listen to any of the tracks via a single click on their list! I’m also sure as more and more users start using the Facebook app more additions would be made to the features.
