Video and Podcast added to Digg
Digg a pioneer and popular social news site. Digg boasts of more than 700,000 users and since the users rate the links while storing their bookmarks the quality of information is usually good. If I have to look for something then I would use Digg first before using the generic search engines as it helps you determine the direction of the search even though you might not find the actual information you are looking for. In the past Digg and its team have been criticized and users have said that they favor certain members while ignoring others and another criticism is that the links and news are rated by a handful of members who update their news information regularly. Whatever said, no one can deny the popularity of Digg as a web2.0 service.
Now Digg has gone further as far as the content is concerned. Multimedia, podcasting and more video has been added to the mix. Kevin Rose, the Digg founder is a prolific user of the podcasting vertical and his weekly podcast show Diggnation has a huge following.
Some of the changes that have been made are
- the navigation has been moved to the top to allow users to quickly switch between sections of Digg.
- There is a quick view of the ten hottest stories on Digg which is a very good features specially for new members as it hooks on the users.
- With it Digg has added 10 hottest videos and on-Digg video previews. The good thing is that the videos play on the same page and do not take the user to another page.
- Users of Digg can now Digg their favorite podcasts and individual podcast episodes.
- Since tabs are the in thing the new interface uses them (though they do not look like tabs) where the members can navigate their account from the links at the top.
The new interface is definately an improvement and would hopefully hook more users. If the revamp is able to do that then the developers and designers at Digg would be able to say that developing Digg was not a flash in the pan.
