Compete.com is a service that has been developed by Bill Gross who started
a search engine call GoTo which became Overture and he is considered to be the pioneer for paid search. Compete was created in 2000 to organize clicks we all make on the web. The vision was simple: “if we share our clicks, then each of us gets smarter by knowing what’s happening across the web”. There are five branches of the product

The vision was simple: “if we share our clicks, then each of us gets smarter by knowing what’s happening across the web”. There are five branches of the product- Compete Snapshot: It provides free information on very site.
- Compete Search: A search engine that revolutionizes search results by combining Compete SnapSHot with Yahoo’s search technology.
- Compete Toolbar: The power of Compete SnapShot in your browser.
- MyCompete: Home page for Compete community members who subscribe to premium content.
- Compete Blog: Highlights how people are using the Internet and has interesting information on user behavior on the Internet.
In October 2006 Compete undertook a study to determine the top 20 domains - ranked by unique visitors.

Some of the main observations were
- The top 20 domains had over 20 million unique visitors!
- There is a gap of 33 million unique visitors between AOL and MSN who were ranked third and fourth respectively.
- Some of the new editions to the list when compared with the list that was determined in October 2005 were Adobe.com, live.com, Wikipedia.org and of course YouTube.com.
- Some of the domains which did not make it to the list were Expedia.com, Monster.com, Paypal.com and weather.com
- Statistics are deceptive is proven by the fact that even though paypal.com and weather.com fell out of the top-20 list the unique visitor traffic to these domains actually went up.
Alexa is a another service that provides information on Internet traffic. User
behavior is studied and analyzed to compile reports on behavior of users of the Internet. Alexa’s report on the top domains on the Internet in US can be found at http://www.alexa.com/site/ds/top_sites?cc=US&ts_mode=country&lang=none What is interesting to note is that the two lists are quite different. One of the reason is that Alexa uses its toolbar which has to be installed to study Internet traffic and since only technical users use the toolbar the traffic represents behavior of technical users of the Internet.
