Techcrunch’s Michael Arrington and Jason Calacanis have just announced a venture for new startups to
showcase themselves. It’s called Techcrunch20. The format of TechCrunch20 is simple: Twenty of the hottest new startups will announce and demo their products over a two day period. And they don’t pay a cent to do this. They will be selected to participate based on merit alone. The dedicated TechCrunch20 blog is published at techcrunch20.com/blog. GigaOm was the first to write about this, followed by Jessica Guynn at the San Francisco Chronicle.
The conference is happening September 17-18 at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco. 20 startup companies will be selected to participate and demo; similar to the Demo conference run by Chris Shipley which typically includes ~60-70 companies. However unlike Demo, which currently charges ~$18K to participate, TC20 will not charge startups to present. Costs of the conference will likely be subsidized by attendees & sponsors (Sequoia Capital is listed as an initial sponsor). Registration is now live: $2K before July 15, $2.5K thereafter.
The panel which would review the web 2.0 applications consists of:
My guess is this will provide some healthy competition for Demo, however Chris Shipley and folks put on a pretty high-end show that will also be a challenge to duplicate right out of the gate. That said, i would never underestimate Mike or Jason. (also see Mike’s earlier post about TechCrunch20 from January).
While there are similar models out there, Techcrunch20 promises to be a premier event with a very high profile audience and will be accessible for startups looking to make a break but might not necessarily have the financial clout to attract attention. If your company wants the opportunity to present to a panel of experts and a perfect audience at Techcrunch20 then go and fill out and return the application form.

Egnyte, the automated file management system, is one of the companies that is going to launch (beta) version of their application at the web 2.0 expo.
Egnyte helps you manage your files on a computer. You need to download the application and install it on
your computer. Once it is installed Egnyte allows you to activate a folder and its contents will be uploaded and tracked on a regular basis (Mac users do not despair it works on Macs as well!) Each time a document is updated Egnyte saves those versions and notifies users if you are sharing a documents with other users. The privacy settings on Egnyte look good and the feedback, till now, has been good. Some of the unique features are
There are other features which are the pipeline but they might not be free. One solution that I would keenly look forward to is allowing users to access Egnyte who are behind firewall.
If you want to use Egnyte to manage your personal documents the system is useful as you instantly have information on the latest versions of all the documents automatically. The interface is easy to use and understand and this is one of the reasons why I think this application has a lot of potential. Since the service is in beta the service is free, so this is the best time to make an account. Egnyte can be used in conjunction with other collaborative tools like Zoho, Thinkfree and Octopz.
Work on Egnyte started back in December 2005 when Vineet Jain, Rajesh Ram, and two others got together
to built the solution. Before that Rajesh Ram and Vineet Jain had co-founded Valdero, a supply chain software company that was acquired by One Network Enterprises in September 2005. Valdero had raised $23 million from Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Mohr, Davidow Ventures, Trinity Ventures and Integral Capital Partners. So raising money is nothing new to the founders, but in this case they first wanted to build a solid product and than go around shopping for funds.
The product has a tremendous potential and right now they seem to be ahead than competition and therefore have a great future if everything works out right for them.

Spock, an industry leading people search
application, helps users find and discover people on the web. With over one hundred million individuals indexed and millions added every day, Spock is the largest and most comprehensive people specific search application. Spock aims to index every person in the world. The service aims to organize the web’s information around people, and considering the amount of people in the world, and the amount of people-searching that goes on via the Internet, it’s quite a goal. But with the sharing of personal information on social networks, and the shift in placing information on the web in image and video-sharing sites, wikis, and the likes, it will become increasingly important to have a better search that can span the various ways in which this information is spread across the web.
Spock is also conducting a contest to find a programmer or a team of programmers that can offer up the best way in which to cluster the web information found on a given person. The main problem in need of a solution here is of course seeking out a way in which to organize the data in the most accurate way. The contest will have a prize of $50,000 and possible employment at Spock, and is a tried and true way to get the world’s best minds working on one of Spock’s core issues (Netflix did the same when looking for a better movie recommendation algorithm).
From the contest web site I quote
“To improve our technology and to create a better user experience, we decided to share the fun! We have selected one of our most interesting problems, namely Entity Resolution, to share with the community, allowing other leading computer scientists and engineers to compete in an open contest. The winners of this global competition will reap a handsome reward, and perhaps even employment at Spock.
You can work individually and in teams. The competition will last 4 months and the winning team will win a Grand Prize of $50,000! Most importantly you’ll be working on a very important and widely applicable problem. We will also be issuing prizes for 2nd and 3rd place.”
Details of the Identity Resolution problem have also been described on the web site as
“A common problem that we face is that there are many people with the same name. Given that, how do we distinguish a document about Michael Jackson the singer from Michael Jackson the football player?
With billions of documents and people on the web, we need to identify and cluster web documents accurately to the people they are related to. Mapping these named entities from documents to the correct person is the essence of the Spock Challenge.
In order to constrain the problem so that it can be successfully solved by an individual or a small team, we provide you with real world data with ground truth. This data contains 100,000 documents about people, and the challenge is to determine all the distinct people described in the data set. This data can be your training set. Once you’ve got your basic algorithm working against the training set, we let you further tune your code by running it against a second test data set.
We give you instant accuracy feedback in the form of a percentage rank score. The score depends on how many correct unique people you can identify in the data. This way you can continue to refine your work and see how well you are holding up against your competitors.”
So if you think you have it in you give it a shot and try it out if you can resolve it! Go ahead and register at http://challenge.spock.com/register.
