Social events calendar - Upcoming.org

| 1 Comment | Posted in Online Calendars |Pali
Upcoming.org, lets people manage their social calendars, share information Event Calendar with RSS feedsabout future events like local concerts and festivals. You can also post event calendars to your own web sites. Features have been added ever since Yahoo took over the company. These features are user reviews and interactive maps.
Upcoming.org is a free site that lets people post events they are interested in or they are going to attend. When posting the events people can commentSocial networking around the world on web 2.0 on the events that others have on their list which is a very nice feature I’m sure people like to hear what others feel about the events they are interested in or are going to attend. The other good thing is that Yahoo does not intend to integrate upcoming.org with their portal and they want to keep it as a separate portal but they would use the information on upcoming.org to enhance the capabilities of the Yahoo web site according to Associated Press. What makes the service useful is that event filters for metro listings and search results can be used to tailor those by metros, category, or date. Upcoming’s export options allow these filtered results to be set up as RSS feed or ICal calendar too. Through these tags Flickr photos can be associated with with these events. By using the a special Upcoming tag, the images will appear on relevant Upcoming event pages. No wonder that Upcoming.org is in the best of the web applications list of everyone.

Access original historical documents at Footnote.com

| No Comments | Posted in web 2.0 |Pali
Footnote, which launched last week allows you to go through millions of documents from history  which are images of original source documents, many of which have never been on the web before. If you are a researcher who uses the Internet and if you are interested in interested in the Civil War or perhaps the Bureau of Investigation? Just look it up on Footnote and within seconds view digitized copies of the original documents including photographs, signed documents, letters, case studies and more. Footnote, which already has 4.5 million documents in its repository, has also established a partnership with the National Archives providing access to millions of historical documents for viewing online. Footnotes is looking to grow the database of the documents by signing strategic alliances with other organizations around the world.I’d imagine Footnote to be a prime attraction for genealogists, historians, public libraries, school systems and history buffs in general.

Another interesting aspect of the service is that it is a interactive one. Footnote encourages users to share knowledge by uploading images, annotating documents and maintaining member pages. Though not all the images on the website can be downloaded for free, all the images can be bookmarked if you are member. For normal users the service is free (basic membership) but for serious users there is an option of monthly usage membership or you can opt to pay on a per download basis.

View and share historical documents online

You might find a lot of the currently archived material uninteresting, but like all Web 2.0 participatory media, the ramifications and impacts of this kind of software will be amazing. The collaborative nature of wikis continues to tear down the boundaries that have made knowledge proprietary. For the researchers on the Internet, Footnote.com promises to be a regular link.

Call a group - Foonz

| No Comments | Posted in web 2.0 |Pali

Set up spur-of-the-moment conference calls with Foonz (pronounced Call a group“phones”), a new service that automatically invites friends, co-workers and others to join in. The service is free. You can setup groups of contacts on the Foonz website in a list that is a lot like a IM buddy list, and you include cell phone numbers. After having done that you call into the Foonz service from your phone and invite your groups to a “group call”. A text message is sent out immediately to the contacts requesting them to join the group call by dialing a specified number. WhenCall a group using Foonz the contacts call in they are joined together automatically with you and other callers in the group. You can also leave a message at the end of the call for contacts who were unable to call in.

The concept is interesting and can be useful. Since these are untested waters one cannot be sure about the popularity of this tool. The service relies on text messaging which has not caught the imagination of cell users and a lot of them ignore text messages which makes a service like Foonz redundant.

The rumors are that the team at Foonz is working on other features as well and that is the reason Foonz has not been released fully. The features that might be added are voice blogging, messaging, conferencing without creating online contacts and other features like tele-commerce.

Experience web 2.0 shopping on Zafu

| No Comments | Posted in web 2.0 |Pali
Zafu has introduced new method of shopping on the Internet which would be Find the perfect fit jeans for youtough to emulate in a real time shopping experience. Zafu asks women shoppers 11 questions about how they prefer jeans to sit on their hips or waist to create a body profile. That alone is a departure from the incongruous body-type descriptions of “pears” or “triangles” found in fashion magazines and retail catalogues. The results are used to match the user with as many jeans as could suit them from a database of hundreds of styles, from broadly marketed Gap to pricey Seven, then link them to a retailer to purchase.

The promoters of Zafu identified one thing that is not available at normal retail stores is exact sizing of shirts and pants and tried to offer that over the Internet which they have succeeded in which is proven by the sales of Zafu. To design the database Zafu invited hundreds of workne in their offices, each woman had to try 32 different jeans, all fits being evaluated by the company’s own apparel experts. This gave them both information about women’s shapes and figures and information about the cuts and fitting secrets of dozens of different jeans brands. To update this information, Zafu has created a streamlined process so that new models can easily being integrated into their database and assortment. Zafu to start with, only deals in Jeans at the moment.

Smart shopping here

The other reason why Zafu has grown is that they are honest. According to their database they are telling some of their users that there is no jean at all in their assortment to fit your body - asking the users to postpone their purchase. Such a practice is unheard of in the retailing industry.

Zafu is making their system smarter by adding new features like saving a profile for the user so that the next time they shop at Zafu it is easier for them and also they can inform their customers of new additions when a new style is added that fits the body perfectly. However there is an option of not saving your profile if you do not want to it.

It seems customized online fashion is a hit as there are more services like Zafu’s showing up on the internet. One of them being http://myshape.com.
